Abstract
This study examined the Efficacy of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) in the Management of Stigmatization among People Living with Vesico vaginal fistula (PLWVVF) in Sokoto State. Two research questions and two objectives were raised to guide the study while two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. It was quasi-experimental research design that consisted of an experimental group and a control group. A total of 50 VVF patients receiving treatments at Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital (MAWCH) Sokoto were selected for the study. Two set of instruments were used in obtaining the data for the study. These are Adapted version of Adeoye (2016) Stigma Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) which measured the extent to which people living with VVF experience stigmatization,’and Adeoye (2016) Programme Evaluation Questionnaire (PEQ) which measured the effectiveness of the treatment programme in the management of stigmatization among people living with VVF. The instruments were validated by experts and their reliabilities were established through test-retest method. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient index of 0.76 and 0.72 reliability was obtained respectively. This indicates that each of the instrument are reliable for measuring what it is supposed to measure. The result obtained showed that, there is significant effect of REBT treatment in the management of stigmatization among people living with Vesico vaginal fistula (PLWVVF) attending MAWCH Sokoto. There is a statistically significant difference in the management of stigmatization among PLWVVF exposed to treatment REBT than those in the control group. The study concluded that REBT was efficient in the management of stigmatization among people living with VVF. It was recommended among others that Counsellors should acquaint themselves with the knowledge of REBT as effective counselling techniques in the management of stigmatization among PLWVVF. Also, People living with VVF should be taught to develop coping mechanisms, resilience, and adjustment techniques to accept life challenges that endangered them.
